Being part English, part Finnish, blowing my own trumpet is not exactly second nature. I write music, songs and words, take photographs, think thoughts, have theories and opinions. I’m just like everyone else; unique. My orchestral work is published under the name of Peter Järnefelt, taking my Finnish mother’s maiden name. Everything else is under my ‘real’ name – Peter Conner. Always useful to have an alter ego.

I was moved to compose this piece to counter, certainly not the sentiments of, but the pomp and ceremony of the Cenotaph ceremony which, to my mind lends a certain establishment grandeur to the horrifying bloodshed, with the not so great and the not so good paying their ‘respects’ to the ‘glorious dead’: the millions that politicians and so-called leaders like them sent to their death. I respect the ones who sacrificed their lives on our behalf. This piece is to honour their memory as well as to honour life and the living. While there’s still time. The authentic sound of the WWI guns at the end of the piece signalling the end of hostilities was recorded using the ‘sound-ranging’ technique (not AI), this is explained in the video.

An emotional evening of wonderful music paying tribute to Lucy Coggle. Her twin sister Rosie added her lovely fiddle playing to this track of ours, ‘Painter on the Hill’. Her playing brought David Lindley to mind.
